The Office of Research Development and Support and Federal Relations at Jackson State University is the conduit for the university's interaction with the world. It shares with the community, the achievements of the University family and the expertise of University Scholars. It also promotes, and supports a research environment at the University by providing faculty and staff with assistance and support in indentifying and securing externally funded grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and donations.

Many sponsored programs and other academic and research projects have the potential to create marketable products, technologies, or techniques. The Division of Technology Management in concert with University of Mississippi research centers and academic departments, helps identify this potential and promote its appropriate realization in the marketplace. This division also assists faculty members in fulfilling their responsibility to cooperate with the University in patenting, licensing, and otherwise commercializing technology for which they are inventors.

The Vice President for Research and Economic Development promotes and monitors scholarship within the university community; signs off on all externally funded projects administered by Southern Miss; assists the members of the instructional staff in their scholarly endeavors; presides over all administrative proceedings relating to research, creative activities, and scholarship; coordinates institutional planning; and collaborates with the provost in advising the university president on personnel actions involving members of the academic staff.
