Mississippi shows potential in its growing biotechnology and life science industry. The state provides strong resources to help foster its growth in this sector.

Some established biotechnology and life science companies in Mississippi include Baxter Healthcare Corporation in Cleveland, Cypress Pharmaceutical, Inc. in Madison, and Hawthorn Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in Madison, among others.

Mississippi’s academic institutions offer resources to promote the life science industry in the state. Mississippi State University (MSU) offers the Office of Intellectual Property & Technology Licensing for the identification, protection, marketing, and licensing of intellectual properties developed at the university, and to assist with technology transfer. MSU is also home to the Life Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (LSBI), whose mission is to foster MSU’s leadership roles in education and research in life sciences and biotechnology, promote economic development, and create employment opportunities in the state. Additionally, MSU’s Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Experiment Station aims to provide science-based solutions to benefit the competitiveness of Mississippi Agribusiness. The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College offers a two-year biotechnology program to prepare students for immediate employment in the field.

Mississippi also offers the Mississippi Technology Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to driving innovation and technology-based economic development for the state.

While still an emerging arena for the biotechnology and life science industry, Mississippi shows promise for further development in the sector.
